- Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name
This week was all about Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name and running around Osaka causing havoc. Well, as much havoc as the calm and stoic Kiryu can muster. For once I focused on just getting through the main story without getting distracted by any of the side stuff, mostly so I had a nice consistent set of videos for a YouTube playthrough compilation. This is the usual Like a Dragon/Yakuza fare: sweaty shirtless men punch each other for honor or something. And at some point people make Kiryu uncomfortable. I didn’t really have much of an issue with any particular fights or anything since I was never short on money and always had plenty of recovery items on-hand. There’s a twist near the end, but I felt it kind of happened suddenly and without much build-up. The game also crosses into Yakuza: Like a Dragon for the finale, and the post-credit is Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, so I got some of that spoiled for me. Unfortunate! If I even ever get to those games…
Then it was time for the Everything Else that these games always have. Usually, you have this massive list of objectives you have to complete in every side mission and mini game in the game, from eating every food option to playing various hands in mahjong. It’s tens of hours needed, so it was nice that Gaiden just bypasses all of this. I still need to do a fair bit, like completing all the coliseum matches and a chunk of Akame’s requests, but that’s a far cry from the usual requisites for a Like a Dragon completion. I’m still quite enjoying the gameplay, but I’m sure this’ll wear on me before all is said and done. But there’s something so satisfying about laying into a group of Street Thugs and watching them go flying from Kiryu’s furious fists. And I’m pretty sure they’re often dying? Not sure he can take a kaiken, stab a guy in the gut, knee the knife further into the wound, and that fella is just “passed out”…
