Just popped into the version of Minecraft on the Nintendo Switch on Sunday to get my achievement for the day, so didn’t play more than a few minutes.

Time for a new game! I’ve owned Ryse: Son of Rome almost since it was released in 2013, and, funnily enough, it is the main reason I rarely buy games anymore. I bought it for full MSRP, and nowadays it’s not only free on Game Pass but frequently on sale bundled with all of its add-ons for less than $10. So, yeah, now unless I’m playing a game imminently or I feel the price is too low to pass up, I just don’t purchase games anymore. This is a Roman-themed action game with lots of Arkham-style countering and blocking, and that kind of combat is just as fun as it always is. There’re two steps to the overall completion: the campaign and “online” (which can be played solo mostly), and the former is very simple since the game itself is simple and the pay-to-win microtransaction currency is free nowadays so you can level up with ease. The most challenging part is completing the campaign on the hardest difficulty, but the checkpoints are very generous and the only real change is not being able to see when heavy attacks are being used by the enemies (and, of course, the increased damage they dole out). Most of the completion is involved with the Arena/online mode, which requires you to reach rank 200. That’s FAR more than you’d naturally get playing and getting the rest of the achievements, so I have a sizeable grind ahead. The highlight of the week was that I needed an online partner for the survival mode and a few of the arena achievements, so my kiddo stepped in on my other Xbox and totally killed it. Like, she mostly plays Minecraft and Fortnite Festival and has never played much in the way of action games, so for her to stand on her own, parrying and executing enemies alongside me, was so cool! It was a really proud gamer-parent moment, and the only things I have left I need her for are far easier. Then it’s all grinding on my own.
