I was a little worried when I started Fuga: Melodies of Steel last week. The ratios for the achievements were really high, and from the comments on the achievements many people started running into issues during their first playthrough on Chapter 4 or 5. It sounded like this was due to needing the forbidden Soul Cannon’s power to make it through these bosses, so as I played I made sure to raise the affinity of my chosen pairs (Kyle with Malt, Boron with Wappa, and Hanna with Chick), while also upgrading the Taranis’ weapons as much as I could. And…yeah, I’m mostly steamrolling every enemy encounter at Chapter 11. Being a strategy game, using good strategy makes the game easy. Who knew? I was even taking the Dangerous Routes when I could to get the elite battles knocked out for that achievement, since I figured that’d get harder as the game progressed. But things are going along at a good clip, and I rarely lose a battle or exhaust my resources too much trying to defeat a particularly troublesome enemy. And the bosses? An absolute joke, and I tend to have more issues with the normal enemies in a Normal or Dangerous path than I do the antagonist waiting for me at the end of the chapter. And that’s a good place to be! Now that I am in the groove, I’m actually really enjoying this game, to the extent that I can’t wait to finish this blog entry and get back to the war in the Free Lands of Gasco!

Ended up being weeb week for me, as on Monday the Game Pass app updated with the new list of games leaving the service, and one of them was one I really wanted to play: Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc Anniversary Edition. Since I could play Fuga with no assistance, but needed a walkthrough to get through this game as efficiently as possible, I played the former at the hospital with my spouse and this one at home. I didn’t really know what to expect with this one, besides the obvious overall visual novel-ness of it all. There was plenty of that and high school drama, with a touch of murder and Phoenix Wright-style trials! The story is bonkers and so anime, but beyond each chapter’s mystery, I never really got drawn into the characters or their stories. Which is a shame, because I know this series has a rabid fanbase. Anyway, I’m not gonna go into much about the game’s details because the main draw is the story and it is FULL of spoilers. But, once I got through the story I moved to the game’s School Mode, where you and your classmates all live together and instead of having to solve murders amongst yourselves, you collect materials and manage energy levels to build relationships and odd projects for Monokuma. You have to max out each character’s relationship over the course of one playthrough and then reach the end to see their endings. I used my first playthrough to level up the characters’ collecting and cleaning skills before moving to my second playthrough and got four student’s endings. At that rate, I’ll probably need 2-3 more playthroughs, which is…boring. Overall, I really didn’t enjoy this game as much as I thought I would. And now the School Mode is really dragging this out. Really makes me wary of trying to catch either of the sequels before they leave Game Pass, since they’re even longer completions!
