Decided to Minecraft it up a bit this week, working on both the new update for the Xbox version and the Switch version. Jumping into a public server and grabbing what I need makes this just a quick distraction nowadays. I decided to clear all the achievements for the Xbox, but only grabbed one when I needed for the Switch. I’ve never bothered to completely clear the latter’s list, so maybe someday I’ll do that!

Back in the far-off time of 2021, a movie of great cultural significance was released. Starring the venerable Nic “The Bees, Ahhhh” Cage, the film was equally incredible and was critically acclaimed. Now, in the year of our lord 2024, the video game adaptation has been released, and this week I grabbed it for $4 and set out to complete Willy’s Wonderland - The Game. But an event of this magnitude required something special, so I programmed a MAME emulator to mime the famous pinball scene, I bought a replica of the main character’s shirt from the film, and painted a beard to match Cage’s excellent facial hair. With all these preparations in place, I turned on my stream and set to a blind completion of the game.
Less than an hour later I’d finished. Really easy side-scrolling beat ‘em up (use LB + Y!) and a simple completion. Honestly, it was all done as a goof for TommyToday whom enjoyed the movie with me, but also a member of the development team saw my post on Twitter and jumped into a stream later on to tell me how much the team at Mito Games enjoyed my little show! Definitely made the whole thing extra special.

Well, that worry about the MVP achievement in XDefiant definitely proved to be valid this week. Sure, I started the week off nailing a second MVP, but it wasn’t long after that when I was booted from the Welcome Playlist and found myself playing against almost nothing but sweats. Match after match, round after round, I was constantly facing players that would look at me and dead-eye headshot me almost instantly. No matter how hard I tried, I’d be moving and scoring just as fast as I was before, but the top players would have 3x or more my score! I realized I needed to change up my abilities to something that would get me more points; not really any such thing with the Echelon’s cloaking, which I was using all the time. Using the Echelon’s other ability, though, gave me a good spike, but what really put me on their level was using the Phantoms’ Mag Barrier during location-based objective matches to protect my team. Combined with trying to always be in the heat of the action, I almost got that final MVP more than a few times as Saturday wore on, but never quite got there. The biggest problem is there’s still an element of randomness: I have to be on a team that’s not too good/bad, same for the enemy team, and I have to be managing to be on the objective most of the time. It’s a lot, and I can’t wait to get it so I can finish my grind at a pace that’s more my style.
